IN HONOR OF Navy Petty Officer MIKE MONSOOR PO2 (EOD2) (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)

The following was forwarded to me by my good childhood friend Cindy Hollowell in Texas. I found this to be very fitting and appropriate to post since Cindy and I both share an admiration for our militarys' dedication to America.

Navy Petty Officer Mike Monsoor PO2 (EOD2) (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Mike Monsoor, a Navy EOD Technician, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for jumping on a grenade in Iraq, giving his life to save his fellow Seals. During Mike Monsoor's funeral in San Diego, as his coffin was being moved from the hearse to the grave site at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, SEALS were lined up on both sides of the pallbearers' route forming a column of twos, with the coffin moving up the center. As Mike's coffin passed, each SEAL, having removed his gold Trident from his uniform, slapped it down, embedding the Trident in the wooden coffin.
The slaps were audible from across the cemetery. By the time the coffin arrived grave side, it looked as though it had a gold inlay from all the Tridents pinned to it. This was a fitting send-off for a warrior hero. We should make stories like this front-page news everyday, instead of the trivial things we see. (A special thank you to Cindy Hollowell for sending this to me!!).

It's a wonderful story...and the media did cover it, when the event happened three years ago and when he got the Medal of Honor a year ago...

Thank you Don!! I try to post interesting things whenever I receieve them in the mail.

Thanks for your reply, Kristopher. I remember hearing about that quite sometime ago. What I posted today, was what I received in the mail. I will correct the last part of the post. Did you read my post about Andrew Kinard? I was so touched when I watched the CMA awards, and saw how injured he was. There are MANY of our military that come back home wounded like he is. Our prayers go out to ALL of them. We are truly blessed to have our WW1, WW2, Vietnam Vets and all who have survived any of our wars.

As Alo pointed out, Mike was a SEAL, not EOD. His rate was actually MA2 (Master at Arms 2nd Class - that would be paygrade E5, a Sergeant in the Army or Marines)

Two sources with more detail on the actual event are:
